Commission backs off from plans to privatise EC eco-label

In the face of overwhelming pressure from Member States, EC Environment Commissioner Ritt Bjerregaard is to reconsider proposals to privatise the EC eco-labelling scheme and force national schemes to give way to it. Plans to replace the current "pass-fail" system with a three-tier rating system for each of a product's major environmental effects may also be dropped.
