DTI draws teeth from plans to reform UK chemicals policy
Proposals for a UK chemicals strategy were issued by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) in July. 1 The paper says disappointingly little about the sustainable production and use of chemicals. Its main proposals outline ways of accelerating risk assessments of chemicals in the environment, extending responsibility for these to chemical users, and promoting substitution of hazardous substances. But much of the document's sting has been drawn by late drafting changes apparently demanded by the Department of Trade and Industry.
