Battle's blues over Dounreay give a view into the nuclear establishment

Energy Minister John Battle has given misleading and conflicting versions of his knowledge of a damning report into safety breaches at the UK Atomic Energy Authority's Dounreay nuclear site to the House of Commons Trade and Industry Committee. Moreover, officials withheld the report from Ministers for almost a year - on apparently spurious legal grounds - during which time key decisions were taken on the plant's future. Remarkably, however, the Committee's report refrains from calling for a major overhaul of the sweeping secrecy provisions in legislation governing nuclear sites.
