Extra shellfish waters to be designated after 20 years
Designation of at least 60 additional waters in England and Wales under the 1979 EC Directive on the quality of shellfish waters was proposed in a consultation paper issued by the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) in July. 1 A response to pressure from the European Commission, the proposals have been welcomed by the shellfish industry. The water industry estimates that the move will cost it around £60 million.
