Pressure on radioactive discharges, oil rigs and chemicals

Substantial new measures on discharges of radioactive and hazardous substances and disposal of offshore installations were agreed at a Ministerial meeting of the OSPAR Commission in Sintra, Portugal, on 22-23 July. The agreement brings fresh pressure on nuclear fuel reprocessing at BNFL's Sellafield works, spells extra costs for the oil industry in disposing of redundant rigs, and sends an important signal to chemical manufacturers and users.
