Damning Dounreay audit leads to red faces for regulated and regulator

An audit by the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate (NII) has confirmed numerous shortcomings in safety and radioactive waste management practices at the UK Atomic Energy Authority's Dounreay nuclear facility. 1 Many "chronic safety problems" were linked to UKAEA's heavy dependence on contractors since its partial privatisation in 1994. However, the report also raises serious questions over the NII's own track record as the site's regulator.
