Welsh Water breaches discharge consent

Welsh Water was fined £1,250 on 31 July for breaching the discharge consent for its Tattenhall sewage works in Cheshire. Routine samples taken last November found levels of suspended solids over eight times and BOD levels almost three times consent limits. A mechanical failure had allowed sludge to mix with the final effluent. The company pleaded guilty before Northwich magistrates and was ordered to pay costs of £150.
