South West Water embarrassed by poor sewage disinfection
South West Water's ultra-violet (UV) disinfection plants appear to be largely ineffective at destroying bacteria in sewage effluents discharged close to bathing waters and shellfish beds. Instead of achieving up to a 10,000-fold reduction in bacterial numbers, some of the plants are averaging only a 1.5 to 3-fold reduction.
