Sparks fly as "green electricity" comes to market

In a bid to encourage consumers to buy "green" electricity in the newly liberalised domestic market, Friends of the Earth (FoE) has published a league table of electricity companies' environmental credentials. 1 The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is mooting a verification scheme to support a "green electricity" label - but its plans have been savaged by environmental groups and the renewable energy industry, which says they would fail to reward suppliers for developing new capacity.
