Agency pushes tough line on water abstractions

The Environment Agency wants water abstraction charges increased and compensation for revoking environmentally damaging abstraction licences abolished "as soon as possible". These and other key points in its response to a Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) consultation paper on abstraction licensing are fundamentally at odds with the views of water companies and industry.
