Scottish bathing waters hit ten-year low

Scottish bathing water quality in 1998 was "the worst for ten years", according to the Scottish Environment Protection Agency. Only 12 of 23 waters designated under the 1976 EC Directive on bathing water quality met mandatory microbiological standards, and just three met tougher guideline standards - down from 18 and five, respectively, in 1997.
