Government flouts nitrate rules over Scottish estuary

The Government has failed to designate a Scottish estuary under the 1991 EC Directive on nitrate pollution - despite warnings from the European Commission that it believes the UK to be in breach of the legislation. Growing pollution of the Ythan estuary has been ignored by successive Governments, despite expert advice that action is required to stem nitrate inputs from farmland.
