Enforcement action

A major spillage of 36% hydrochloric acid has occurred at Brunner Mond's Northwich site in Cheshire. A pipe at the base of a tank failed, releasing some 200 tonnes of the acid. The liquid was contained in the site's effluent treatment system, but a cloud of acid fumes escaped from the site, and residents were advised to stay indoors. The Agency is investigating the cause of the incident.
