The inhospitable climate for genetically modified crops

A study for the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAFF) has confirmed the widespread public concern about genetically modified crops and foods and helped in understanding of its roots. 1 Private polling by biotechnology business Monsanto has revealed a further collapse in public confidence since the summer. As the Government begins to think seriously about reversing the decline, the central question is whether imparting reassuring messages to the public can do the trick - or whether innovation in participatory decision-making is its only hope of success.
