Commission proposes "ambitious" air quality standard for benzene

The European Commission has proposed new air quality standards for benzene and carbon monoxide to be achieved by 2010. The benzene standard is tougher than industry had hoped, but the Commission hopes to head off opposition by proposing that pollution "hot spots" should have more time to comply.
