Government's qualified welcome for traffic reduction Bill

A Private Member's Bill to require local authorities to set targets and devise plans to curb road traffic received an unopposed second reading in the House of Commons on 24 January. The Government has given the Bill qualified support after its sponsors dropped a proposal for national traffic reduction targets - but is looking for further concessions before giving the legislation its full backing.
