Worries over drinking water as water competition gets go-ahead
Legislation to introduce competition in water supply and sewerage services will be introduced in the next Parliament if the Conservatives win the election. Environment Secretary John Gummer announced in January that the Government will proceed with plans floated last year to introduce "common carriage" of water to large consumers - but failed to touch on any of the difficulties which this may pose for safeguarding drinking water quality.
