EC move on acidification leaves UK strategy adrift

Tough national emission ceilings for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and ammonia have been proposed by the European Commission in a draft strategy on acidification. Several Member States, including the UK, would need to introduce new and potentially costly measures to meet the targets. The proposals have pulled the rug from under the Government's newly published sulphur strategy, which predicts that the UK will meet its existing commitments to reduce SO2 emissions with ease.
