EC marketing consent fails to still controversy over Ciba maize

The European Commission has avoided a potentially costly trade war with the USA by approving the marketing of genetically modified maize, despite opposition from most Member States. But Austria has since announced that it will ban imports of the maize because it may increase resistance to antibiotics. Meanwhile, agreement has been reached on an EC Regulation on labelling and marketing of novel foods - but critics claim that most genetically modified foods will escape labelling requirements.
