Radwaste policy in tatters as Gummer blocks Nirex dump
Environment Secretary John Gummer has dismissed plans by Nirex to construct an underground test laboratory near Sellafield, Cumbria. The ruling - which makes unusually damning criticisms of Nirex's proposals - has set back efforts to find a disposal site for the UK's radioactive waste for many years and called into question the justification for nuclear fuel reprocessing at the controversial THORP plant at BNFL's Sellafield works.
