Labour leaders' betrayal over VAT on energy saving

A move to bring the rate of VAT on energy-saving products down to the same level as VAT on domestic energy was defeated in the House of Commons on 11 March after the Labour leadership ordered MPs not to back the measure. The move brought savage attacks on Labour for reneging on earlier commitments, and has renewed concern among environmental groups about the strength of Labour's environmental policy pledges.
