Acidification plan spells end for high-sulphur fuel oil

A draft Directive which would limit the sulphur content of heavy fuel oil to 1% from 2000 unless it was burned in plant fitted with desulphurisation equipment has been issued by the European Commission. The proposal, which would hit operators of UK refineries and combustion plant particularly hard, forms a key plank of a proposed EC strategy to combat acidification of sensitive ecosystems.
