Oestrogens research fingers flame-retardant chemical

German researchers have found that a commercially important fire retardant chemical, tetrabromo-bisphenol A (TBBA), has oestrogenic properties. The results are likely to add to environmental concern over brominated flame retardants, which are already a focus of attention because of their persistence, toxicity and potential to form dioxin-like compounds on combustion.
