Progress on hazardous waste list points to broadening of EC rules

The Basel Convention ban on exports of hazardous waste for recovery from OECD to non-OECD countries is continuing to send ripples deep into the world of waste management policy and practice. The Convention's technical working group recently completed its work in defining "hazardous waste" for the purposes of the export ban. But, as governments move to incorporate the definitions into domestic and EC legislation to ratify the Convention, the process may lead to a broadening of the definition of hazardous waste generally.
