Tough recycling targets in EC proposal on batteries

Tough new collection and recycling targets for batteries have been proposed in a draft Directive circulated by the European Commission. The draft also proposes phasing out most batteries containing cadmium by 2008. Meanwhile, the UK Government has accepted industry targets well below the EC proposals for recycling of nickel/cadmium batteries over the next four years.
