Study finds tap water causes 40% of gastrointestinal illness

Drinking water meeting all regulatory standards can cause up to 40% of gastrointestinal problems, according to a Canadian study presented to a conference in September. The $1.5 million project, whose sponsors included the US Environmental Protection Agency and the American Water Works Association, also suggested that bacterial growth in water mains may protect consumers from pathogens in the water supply.
