Record jail sentence for clinical waste cowboy

The director of waste company Green Environmental Industries has been imprisoned for 18 months for dumping more than 100 tonnes of high-risk clinical waste at two sites in Hertfordshire. The case is linked to a web of fraudulent activity by the company for which the director has received a further nine-month jail sentence. But it also highlights a lax approach towards compliance with "duty of care" controls by firms which supplied the waste - among them major waste business Cleanaway.
