Commission homes in on PM<SUB>10</SUB> in air quality proposals

A draft EC Directive containing new air quality standards for sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead and fine particulates (PM10) has been issued by the European Commission. Particularly sharp cuts in PM10 emissions will be needed in urban areas - but the Commission has opted for a cautious two-stage approach because of uncertainty over the pollutant's sources and behaviour.
