Policy shift on coastal sewage discharges
A surprise announcement in November suggests that the Government is moving closer to accepting stricter EC treatment standards for coastal sewage discharges - potentially adding tens of millions of pounds to water utilities' bills. The Scottish Office revealed that it will no longer seek derogations allowing reduced treatment for four major discharges. The fate of derogations sought in England and Wales is now in doubt.
