Uncertainty over ammonia dogs acidification policy

Nitrogen compounds are becoming increasingly significant contributors to acid rain as sulphur emissions decline, according to a scientific report produced for the Department of the Environment (DETR).1 International policy is now focusing on nitrogen deposition, but there is a danger that emission targets may not offer the best value for money because the sources of ammonia emissions are not yet fully understood.
