Voluntary labelling scheme for genetically modified foods

UK food manufacturers and retailers will begin introducing a "positive" labelling scheme in January for foods containing genetically modified (GM) soya or maize protein. The scheme rules out the use of "negative" labels because of the implied criticism of biotechnology. It has already been criticised by the European retailers association EuroCommerce for focusing on proteins and ignoring soya and maize products such as oils and flour.
