Environment protection squeezed by public spending constraints

The two environment agencies have secured modest increases in grant-in-aid for next year, but Scotland's agency remains well short of the resources it believes it needs to be an effective enforcement body. Meanwhile, the Energy Saving Trust (EST) looks like having to live with a sharp cut in funding, while yet another reduction in the budget of the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions (DETR) has raised serious questions about its capacity to do its job.
