Deregulation of enforcement puts Agency at risk
The Environment Agency is in danger of having its teeth pulled after being ordered by the Government to draw up a code of practice which will constrain its enforcement activities. The move is likely to burden the Agency with red tape and discourage it from taking prompt action against polluters. It is doubly controversial because it bypasses statutory procedures for consulting Parliament laid down in the Government's deregulation legislation.
