Mystery over radioactivity in landfill leachate

Leachate from landfill sites taking in only household and commercial waste generally contains higher levels of the radioactive isotope tritium than have been detected in leachate from landfills taking radioactive waste. The results are puzzling scientists, who have been unable to find a convincing explanation of the source of the tritium.
