Lengthy EC negotiations ahead on CO<SUB>2</SUB> strategy for cars

A three-pronged strategy to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from cars has been proposed by the European Commission.1 Its main proposals are a voluntary agreement with manufacturers to improve fuel efficiency and as yet unspecified EC legislation on vehicle taxation. The Commission has gone some way to accommodate industry demands not to push fuel efficiency improvements too fast - but its tax proposals are likely to take several more years to agree.
