Hickson's effluent leak leads to record fine
Chemical manufacturer Hickson & Welch has been fined £35,000 - the largest known fine for a single trade effluent offence - for a leak of toxic effluent which caused serious damage to a Yorkshire Water sewage works. The company is now facing a further prosecution by the National Rivers Authority (NRA), along with claims for damages from the sewerage undertaker and staff at the sewage works.
