Coalite fined record £150,000 for dioxin releases from incinerator

Coalite Chemicals has been ordered to pay £450,000 in fines and costs for failing to use the "best practicable means" (BPM) to control emissions of dioxins from an incinerator at its site in Bolsover, Derbyshire. At a hearing in February, HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) presented evidence that low temperatures in the incinerator had failed to destroy dioxin-contaminated wastes, leading to contamination of nearby farms. However, Coalite's last-minute decision to plead guilty has left unanswered questions over HMIP's regulation of the plant.
