Gummer loses judicial review over animal renderer

Environment Secretary John Gummer has suffered his first legal setback over the implementation of the air pollution control system introduced by the Environmental Protection Act 1990. On 6 March, the High Court quashed his decision to allow an appeal by a Wiltshire animal rendering business against a local authority's refusal to grant it an authorisation. The ruling has sparked a new row between the council and the Department of the Environment (DoE).
