New code, but no legislation, to control green claims

The Government has accepted a call by the National Consumer Council (NCC) for a code of practice for environmental claims on products and packaging.1 However, it has stopped short of promising statutory backing for the code - raising fears that it will be toothless. Meanwhile, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) appears to be failing to comply with its own guidelines for non-advertising environmental claims, according to research by Sutton council.2
