MPs hear views on environmental effects of free trade

Expansion of international trade will magnify existing environmental problems and create new ones in the absence of effective policies for sustainable development, the House of Commons Environment Committee has been told. Many witnesses to its inquiry on trade and the environment have called for an international environmental body to be set up as a counterweight to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) to ensure that environmental impacts receive proper consideration as international trade burgeons.
