DoE fudges "duty of care" code, delays waste classification scheme

A revised version of the statutory code of practice on the "duty of care" which applies to parties in the waste management chain was issued by the Department of the Environment (DoE) on 21 March.1 The main changes deal with the scrap metal industry, but the new code also contains confusing advice on how businesses should act when they receive waste from an unregistered carrier. Meanwhile, the DoE has been forced to back off from introducing a new statutory waste classification system following protests from the waste industry.
