Algal toxins "underestimated", may pass up food chain

Research commissioned by the National Rivers Authority (NRA) has cautioned that the number and quantities of algal toxins in freshwaters have been underestimated in the past because analytical methods have concentrated on only one compound.1 The research also reveals that the toxins can accumulate in invertebrates and pass up the food chain to fish - a potential route for human exposure.
