Phthalates scare subsides amidst Euro-confusion

The public concern which erupted in May over phthalates in baby formula milk was calmed after the European Commission supported an assessment by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF) that they pose no risk to health. However, the opinion from Brussels was not based on any scientific assessment - but an EC committee which reviewed the data in June came to less reassuring conclusions about the safety of phthalates in food and the environment.
