Five major retailers have pooled resources to investigate the environmental and health effects of PVC in the wake of public concern about the health risks posed by phthalates - chemicals used as plasticisers in flexible PVC. The group intends to apply the precautionary principle, and will set strategies and timetables for phasing out PVC if necessary.
