Untapped potential for sales of peat-free composts

Consumer demand for peat-free products could increase ten-fold if shoppers were made aware of the need to preserve peat bogs, according to a report by a group of environmental organisations, the Peatlands Campaign Consortium (PCC).1 The report recommends clearer identification of product contents, and pricing policies and promotions which favour alternatives to peat - moves which will be essential if the Government accepts tough targets recommended by the Royal Commission on Environmental Pollution (RCEP) for a rapid wind-down of peat extraction.
