Car industry lashes out at Auto/Oil proposals

Proposals for car emission limits and fuel quality which will take effect in 2000 were issued by the European Commission on 19 June. Though based on the Auto/Oil project in which it collaborated, the proposals have been savaged by the motor industry - which will bear the brunt of the cost - while environmentalists have denounced them as too weak. The prospects for tougher emission limits in 2005 - which would require substantial investment by refiners to improve fuel quality - now hang on the outcome of a second Auto/Oil project.
