Fine for refinery fire cut after BP makes amends

BP Oil has been fined £50,000 for a major accident at its Grangemouth refinery in 1994 which put at risk the lives of 1,200 employees and the local community. In an unusual move, the court cut £100,000 from the fine which it thought appropriate to the case after the company donated the same sum to local charities.
