Catalysts fail to dent NO<SUB>2</SUB> pollution levels

Average levels of nitrogen dioxide in urban air increased in 1994 despite the introduction of catalytic converters, according to a survey of nation-wide diffusion tube measurements carried out for the Department of the Environment (DoE).1 The findings suggest that a proposed air quality standard for NO2 may be considerably more difficult to attain than indicated by current models.
