Rivers improve as NRA bows out

River quality in England and Wales showed a further small improvement in 1995/6, according to the final annual report of the National Rivers Authority (NRA).1 However, the quality of rivers in three of the NRA's eight regions declined - and compliance by major dischargers other than sewage works with their consents was poor.
