New EC waste strategy finalised
A revised version of the EC's waste strategy was adopted by the European Commission on 30 July. The paper pushes the concept of producer responsibility to the forefront of EC waste policy, and outlines the Commission's plans to set waste minimisation and recovery targets, introduce new controls on waste combustion, and act on priority waste streams. It also confirms that a revised proposal on landfills will be issued shortly. The Commission has also conceded that energy recovery may in some cases be environmentally superior to recycling - but without giving the two equal status in the waste hierarchy.
